OUR MISSION

The Backside Learning Center is a nonprofit organization building community and enriching the lives of backside workers and families at Churchill Downs.

VALUES

EDUCATION

We believe in a community of backside workers empowered through education. We offer classes and tutoring to help adult students practice their English and reach their language learning goals.

CONNECTION

We believe in closing the gap between backside workers and the resources they need to thrive in Louisville. We help clients navigate barriers and provide them with what they need to make informed decisions for the wellbeing of themselves and their families.

COMMUNITY

Our community center serves as a “home-away-from-home” and all our programs promote opportunities for healthy interactions among staff, instructors, volunteers, and fellow backside workers..

OUR PROGRAMS

HEALTH & WELLNESS

-We promote and provide access to education and programs that support the health and wellbeing of our clients and their families. Our initiatives are designed to bridge resource gaps within our community.

HUMAN SERVICES

We offer holistic support for our clients and their families through comprehensive case management and human services. Our guiding principles are centered around compassion, empathy, and empowerment.

EDUCATION

Partnering with backside community members (adult and youth), the Backside Learning Center offers a variety of educational support programs aimed at encouraging lifelong learning, achieving personal and professional goals, and facilitating connections between racetrack families and the greater Louisville community.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteering at the BLC provides an opportunity to get involved in the community, meet new people, and learn from different perspectives.

FAMILY EMPOWERMENT

The BLC serves as a link between members of the backside community and outside agencies/resources aiming to encourage self-advocacy when possible.

CULTURE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Backside Learning Center encourages community member engagement by facilitating access to a diversity of cultural events with an emphasis on the arts and nature.
