The Event
April 14th was a fantastic day for the Backside Learning Center, as nearly 100 guests filled the Louisville Thoroughbred Society for our Thoroughbred Owner’s Handicapping Social!
With a focus on our Purses for a Purpose initiative, which allows owners to partner with the Backside Learning Center and donate a portion of their horse’s winnings to our organization, the event was a time for well-known industry leaders to learn about our mission while having fun in the process.
Famous Faces in Attendance

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale and “Bourbon” Brook Smith spoke with the audience and discussed several future bets that could benefit the BLC! Aside from Brook Smith’s initial $10,000 Derby Futures bet on Tiz the Bomb that he will donate to the BLC if the horse were to win, “Mattress Mack” revealed that if the favorite or Smile Happy win the Derby, he would donate $200,000 to the BLC. “Bourbon Brook” then responded with his own offer of donating $200,000 to the BLC if “Mattress Mack’s” bets fall through. We are incredibly grateful for their time spent at the event, and we cannot wait to cheer for these horses on the first Saturday in May.

The audience was also given the opportunity to hear from a handful of horse racing experts including Caton Bredar, Joe Kristufek, and Brandon Stauble in a panel moderated by NBC’s Donna Barton Brothers. This esteemed group treated guests to an informative and thorough discussion on who might be the best bet to win the Derby, and we cannot thank this group enough for their contributions to the BLC!
