For this month’s Winner’s Circle Highlight, which is our initiative that allows supporters to support the BLC monthly, we are highlighting long-time supporter Laura Herberholz!

When Laura first moved to Louisville in 2010, she took a tour and learned about the backside. “It was then that I started to see that there more life back there than I had ever been aware of from the front side of racing,” said Laura.

Then, in a meeting with CDI president Bill Carstanjen, she had asked how she could get involved in a volunteering aspect at Churchill Downs. He mentioned the BLC, and became involved in a volunteering event to paint our building in 2011. She then started tutoring backside workers in the spring.

Since her initial involvement, she has seen many new programs come about. She’s been most impressed with the increased focus on family programming and health and wellness. “What struck me most was learning about how very sparsely people leave the backside, and it is amazing how programming started coming directly to the community such as mental health support, the food pantry, etc., said Laura.”

She emphasizes the importance of understanding that the backside community is so much bigger than people fathom, and it deserves increased attention. “It is a 24/7 workforce that people do not realize exists, and I appreciate you all shedding a light on it.”

We want to thank Laura for her amazing support of our organization. If you would like to learn about how to become a member of the Winner’s Circle, click the link here.
