On June 13th, a group of teens met with REMAX Realtor Jose Bonilla and talked about what it’s like to work in real estate!
Bonilla, originally from Panama, provided an entrepreneurial and business perspective inspiring our teens. They were engaged, asked questions, and have learned to start saving—NOW!
Last Thursday, on June 30th, five Spanish-speaking players from Louisville City FC, Louisville’s local USL team, visited our teens! A huge thank you to Defender Oscar Jimenez, Forward Ray Serrano, Forward Jorge Gonzalez, Goalkeeper Danny Faundez, and Midfielder Carlos Moguel Jr, Team Administrator George Davis IV and others for opening up and sharing your story. Although a little timid at first, our kids participated in great discussion, also including how they’ve experienced racism in the past. It soon became an experience they will never forget!
Throughout the summer, we plan to host a variety of Spanish-speaking professionals to talk to our teens about their profession. The group is also learning about success in business, education, and leadership. This is part of our “Creciendo Juntos” program, or “Growing Together”.
The goal of the “Creciendo Juntos” program is for the Backside Learning Center to become an ally in the support of youth leaders learning to become agents of change in our community. There are three phases to the program. For the first phase, last spring, we hosted 10 therapy sessions in which students had the chance to talk about their mental health and learn from one another. We’ve most recently begun the second phase, “Emotional support and learning about community organizing”. For the last phase, we encourage our students to go out in the community and make changes on their own to positively impact their communities!
Keep in touch as we provide updates on this young group of professionals!
