We are delighted to be partnering with the local nonprofit organization “I Would Rather Be Reading”, and are thrilled to have been chosen as a pilot site for using their Mindful Literacy curriculum with our youth students.
This exciting connection was facilitated by Metro United Way just in time for us to implement the Mindful Literacy curriculum in our after-school program Front Runners this past spring semester. We just finished our last round of evaluations last week and have seen vast improvement!
This curriculum provides social-emotional education combined with literacy education through a trauma-informed lens. By combining education about self-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making with reading, writing, and comprehension practice, Mindful Literacy hones in on some of the educational gaps children are currently facing due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.
Our kids were engaged by the curriculum’s books and activities, which often catalyzed important conversations about their own social-emotional experiences, skills, and needs during our time at Front Runners. We are excited to continue implementing the Mindful Literacy curriculum in our Front Runners program this coming school year!
Stay tuned to learn more about our summer reading programming as it begins in the next week!
